Manchester United continued their season revival on Tuesday night with a 3-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace in a League Cup third-round match.
Man United’s domination in the middle of the field (69% ball possession and 796 passes compared to the visitors’ 358) proved crucial to the team’s success.
Casemiro may have been the single most important contributor to this excellent performance in the middle of the field.
To begin with the less impressive parts of Casemiro’s performance, the Brazilian has a lot of room for improvement in his tackling.
Two of Casemiro’s tackles were effective, but he was dribbled past three times. Not exactly the kind of performance one would hope for from a defensive midfielder of his caliber.
Casemiro made three interceptions and won 2 out of 6 duels, neither of which are great numbers when playing a squad like Crystal Palace.
However, Casemiro’s passing and оffensive prowess were outstanding.
The Brazilian midfielder completed an impressive 100 of 113 passes attempted (or 88%).
United’s оffensive surge was crucially aided by Casemiro, who completed 10 of 14 long balls and made one cross.
In the 27th minute, the 30-year-old had his moment in the sun as he headed home United’s second goal of the match after a precise corner kιck by Mason Mount.
He continued to be a threаt with the ball in the second half, setting up United’s third goal by Anthony Martial with a pinpoint cross.
Casemiro had a fantastic game offensively, netting a goal and assisting on another, but his lackluster defensive showing was more than made up for by his masterful display with the ball.
If Casemiro can build on this encouraging outing, he may be able to overcome his rough start to the season and return to form, something fans at Old Trafford have been hoping for.
