The Yankees agree with Aaron Judge’s view the inquiries are difficult

Judge’s comments on Sunday that this Yankees season had been a “big failure” and that there is “a lot of stuff going on around here that needs to be fixed” were still being felt in The Bronx on Monday.

Before the Yankees’ final home game of 2023, Anthony Rizzo said, “You can’t just sit here and say what we did this year is good enough to go into next year.” The Yankees won the game, 6-4.

Similar to Judge’s comments on Sunday, Rizzo, certain teammates, and Aaron Boone all recognized there are issues that need to be “fixed” with the team but did not provide any further details.

Boone promised discussions to put the squad in a “better position next year.”

Boone lamented that the team would have hoped to be playing in the playoffs the next week. “We’re always accountable and we have an expectation around here to be playing next week at this time,” he said. To better prepare for the future, “we have to ask some tough questions and will ask some tough questions.”

The coach admitted that the team’s poor performance was matched by some unlucky breaks.

Injuries are something that should not be taken lightly, Boone remarked. I believe we would be in a great position to begin with regarding our starting rotation. Keeping guys healthy, getting guys back, and overcoming poor performances have all been challenges this year.

Both Judge (who was out for about two months with a ruptured ligament in his right big toe) and Giancarlo Stanton were mentioned for their lengthy absences.

In spite of this, Boone reflected on 2019: “I think back to how badly we were hurt. This is by no means the final word. And when it does, we’ll have to figure it out.

It “begins with the little things,” as Rizzo put it.

Then you ask why the clubhouse wasn’t adequate, and I respond, “You come in here and say that.” – Rizzo. There was no fundamental conflict of character. To put it simply, we all got along. This place was completely united. Unfortunately, our lackluster performance continued throughout the season.

I believe that as we progress further into the offseason, we will be able to analyze what went wrong and learn from it.

The first baseman, a crucial cog in the offense, was sidelined with post-concussion symptoms he is only now beginning to overcome.

He anticipates a full recovery throughout the offseason and a return to regular spring training.

The Yankees will be counting on Rizzo and others to help them turn things around next season.

There’s “no doubt” that “we have to, on some level, count on guys that were missing this year,” as Boone put it. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to count on them, in my opinion. We have a good chance of getting those guys back up and running. There are some people that need to make some alterations to their playstyles and approaches, but there are also some weak spots on the squad that we need to shore up. We need to make a lot of wise choices.

It’s unclear who will have a say beyond Judge, Boone, and maybe even general manager Brian Cashman.

DJ LeMahieu is one of the veterans who is looking ahead with optimism.

”There are clearly things that need to be addressed,” LeMahieu said. Just start the season over again, please. I don’t know what the changes are and I don’t know what the direction is, but I am excited about the future, that’s for sure. Some of the younger guys are good and our pitching staff is great. I know we have the pieces.”

Those pieces might look different the next time the Yankees play in The Bronx.

“Put it on us players,’’ Rizzo said of the blame for ’23. “We didn’t play well enough as a whole. We didn’t do [well] enough to be competing in October. … It’s gonna be really easy in all the stories written about this and that, pointing fingers here and there, and I’m sure fingers are gonna be pointed. But for me, I personally didn’t do a good enough job of being a leader
