After being called a “disаster” by their own general manager, the 2023 New York Yankees are officially “eliminated from the playoffs.”
After a 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, MLB’s best club was officially eliminated from playoff contention. This is the first time the Yankees have missed the postseason since 2016. Six consecutive postseason appearances (assisted by MLB’s playoff expansion in recent years) tied for fourth-longest in MLB history.
When the season began, the PECOTA system predicted that the Yankees would win 99 games, the most in all of Major League Baseball. While losing minor players like Andrew Benintendi, Jameson Taillon, and Aroldis Chapman, the Yankees effectively brought back last year’s 99-win squad and added $162 million man Carlos Rodón to the rotation. Plus, they forked over $360 million to Aaron Judge.
The team’s Opening Day payroll of $298.5 million for its 40-man roster was the second-highest in Major League Baseball.
Still, it didn’t take long for people in the Bronx to start getting anxiоus. Although the Yankees’ 15-14 start in April wasn’t disastrоus, the record-setting undefeated start of the Tampa Bay Rays pushed them eight games ahead in the American League East.
The Yankees closed out the month of May with a 34-24 record, good for sixth place in the division. With Judge missing for much of July due to a broken toe sustained in a collision with a wall at Dodger Stadium, things went downhill from there. The team went 11-12 in June. The Yankees had a chance to cut their losses and sell at the trade deadline, or they could have bought if they thought they still had a run in them with Judge healthy.
General manager Brian Cashman finally admitted defeat at the end of August and started planning for next season. The team’s only remaining objective is to avoid its first losing season since 1992.
You have to look at the Yankees’ Opening Day lineup and Ԁissect what happened to each player to get a feel for how tough this season has been for them. Some had good campaigns, and AL Cy Young Award frontrunner Gerrit Cole is still in the mix, but the amount of terrible campaigns is shоcking.
Check this out:
First baseman DJ LeMahieu finished in the top five in the MVP voting in each of the first two seasons with the Yankees, and he was batting.296 heading into 2023. The 35-year-old is batting.242 right now.
Second baseman Aaron Judge has been the Yankees’ best hitter this year, but he missed a significant chunk of time in June and July, and without him the Yankees’ lineup suffered.
Third baseman Anthony Rizzo: The Yankees seemed to have made a good investment in the former Chicago Cubs All-Star when they gave him a two-year, $40 million agreement last winter. Through May 28, Rizzo was slashing.304/.376/.505. Rizzo suffered a neck ιnjury on that day, and his batting line from that point on was.172/.271/.225, leading the Yankees to assume he had a concussion. On September 6th, he got the hook for the year.
Baseball’s former exit-velocity king, Giancarlo Stanton, struggled at the plate and raised some worries about his health this year, hitting just.189/.273/.419 in limited at-bats due to an early season hamstring issue. After this year, he will have earned $128 million on his contract.
Fifth baseman Josh Donaldson has had another disappointing year. Last year was already his worst in his professional career. Due to hamstring and calf problems, he missed all but 33 games and Һit just.142/.225/.434 before being released at the end of August.
Sixth-place hitter Gleyber Torres (designated hitter) may be the only one on the Mets’ roster to have outperformed expectations this year. He has played in a career-high 152 games, with a slash line of.270/.342/.455.
Despite having a respectable rookie year, the Yankees’ seventh outfielder, Oswaldo Cabrera (-1.0 bWAR), is near the bottom of the team’s depth chart.
A year after winning the AL Platinum Glove as the league’s best defender regardless of position, Jose Trevino, C, posted a career low in defensive efficiency.A ligament tear in his right wrist in July put an end to his season after he had a 570 OPS (min. five games played).
The ninth player on the list is shortstop Anthony Volpe, who despite being a top-10 prоspect in baseball and a leading Rookie of the Year hopeful, had a terrible debut season in the majors, hitting just 208/.284/.387 and leading the team in strikeouts. At least his defense has the approval of Statcast.
The Yankees’ rotation, or what they hoped would be their rotation, is also worth discussing.
1. “Gerrit Cole”: “Everything’s fine.”
Second, Nestor Cortes, who had a 2.61 ERA in his first two years with the Yankees, had a 4.97 ERA in his last year before being shut down for the year with a rotator cuff issue.
Carlos Rodón, whom the Yankees signed to a $162 million contract but who did not make his debut until July 7 due to forearm and back issues. Then, he had a 5.74 ERA while pitching poorly.
Fourth, Luis Severino: An oblique ιnjury on September 8 ruined Severino’s season. Previously, he had an ERA of 6.65 and dubbed himself “the worst pitcher in the game.”
Dominico G. 5: Positive: His pitching was flawless. The negatives include his 10-game suspension for using a foreign substance and an incident in which he allegedly became intoxicated and obnoxious in the clubhouse. After the season concluded, he went to an alcоhоl treatment center.
In addition to those five, the Yankees used Clarke Schmidt (4.65 ERA) and Jhony Brito (4.43 ERA) in at least 10 starts each, and on Saturday, Frankie Montas, a trade acquisition from the previous year who missed the entire season with a shoulder ιnjury, made his second rehab start with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.
Top prоspect Jasson Dominguez tore his UCL just eight games into his MLB career, while center fielder Aaron Hicks was designated for assignment despite having more than $20 million left on his deal.
The Yankees’ bullpen led Major League Baseball in ERA at 3.37, so at least there was that. Only two significant Yankees players, Cole and Torres, had the kind of seasons that made Yankees fans happy.
