A revitalized United team was supposed to compete against the rest of the Premier League in this season. Last season, Erik ten Hag did miracles, particularly in securing Champions League football, but this season has been a complete disaster.
Off-field disputes and incidents have caused division between the team, playing staff, and boardroom, but on Saturday night football was the topic of conversation for once.
Although United defeated Burnley 1-0, it was far from an easy victory for the Red Devils over Vincent Kompany’s team.
At the end of regulation, a goal from Bruno Fernandes was enough to separate the two teams. In addition to the three points, a clean sheet was also desperately needed. A shutout on this occasion was a major plus for a club that had given up ten goals in their previous three games in all competitions.
Having said that, it was a game that didn’t hold back on its flaws. Marcus Rashford’s performance is one of them and has continued to be.

However, the 25-year-old has discovered life to be somewhat more challenging in this slow United side for 2023–24.

At Turf Moor, he ultimately lost control of the ball 12 times, or once per four touches, due to his excessive possession desire.
He had an embarrassingly lower number of touches (46) than the goalie Andre Onana (48), and Onana also made more passes (25 vs. 24). The statistics may not show much, but they clearly demonstrate how little of an impact Rashford had on the proceedings.
The £300k per week star put on a lackluster performance during the match for a guy who is typically so clinical and dangerous in the final third. He also failed to register a single shot on target.
Rashford must take the lead as the senior player given that Jadon Sancho and Antony, for example, are currently unable to participate. Since Rasmus Hojlund has joined the team, he is less likely to play through the center, which means Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri will be on his tail right away.
The wide star was virtually impossible to drop last term. He is no longer immune to such treatment as of this season, though.
Rashford will undoubtedly improve eventually, but the longer his poor play continues, the more likely it is that a change will need to be made.
