Caoimhin Kelleher, the Liverpool goalkeeper, has requested that Jurgen Klopp give him more playing time in the Europa League this year.
Despite his excellent praise at Anfield, 24-year-old Kelleher currently finds himself second fiddle to Alisson Becker. However, the Republic of Ireland international has filled in for the Brazilian on occasion in the Premier League and performed admirably.Kelleher, who had been on the bench for the first few games of the year, started in the midweek 3-1 victory over LASK. The goalkeeper is looking forward to the many first-team opportunities that exist in Europe.
Kelleher commented, “It’s my first competitive game since Southampton,” to Liverpoolfc.com. There is always some rust for outfielders, too. It felt good to play again, and I’m looking forward to continuing in this tournament.Even though Kelleher hasn’t seen much action in the Premier League, his quality hasn’t gone unnoticed by other teams. In the run-up to the summer transfer window, he was heavily connected with a move, with Brentford being among the clubs interested in Kelleher’s services.
The Bees were looking to replace David Raya with a new keeper over the summer. Despite Liverpool’s ‘unrealistic’ asking price of £15 million, the club was unable to sign the midfielder who has made only a handful of outings at the professional level.
It’s not apparent if Kelleher was willing to make that kind of change at the time. Liverpool, though, made it obvious that they had no interest in letting the Irishman go.In May, Klopp made it clear that he and Kelleher were not going anywhere. The German was asked about rumors of a move, and he said, “Caoimhin Kelleher?” He is legally obligated to do so. You’d like for us to sаy our goodbyes in case, right? Caoimh isn’t going anywhere, in my honest opinion. I would have to hear an unbelievable proposal to even consider selling him.
Kelleher hadn’t played for Liverpool since last season’s exciting 4-4 tie against Southampton on the final day of the season before Thursday night’s win in Austria.
If Liverpool does well in Europe, Kelleher may get more playing time. The Reds will play both Union Saint-Gilloise and Toulouse, both at home and on the road, before the holiday break. The season kicked off earlier this week.
