The Boston Red Sox are said to be in pursuit of baseball’s biggest star as they prepare to make significant roster upgrades this winter.
Will Middlebrooks, a former infielder for the Red Sox and current analyst for NESN, recently discussed the team’s strategy for signing free agent Japanese star pitcher Shohei Ohtani.
I can only sаy so much… Red Sox are going to make the most of their opportunity… Middlebrooks claimed on Friday’s “WAKE and RAKE” podcast that the front office is “right now, at this minute, trying to find a way to get (Shohei Ohtani).
If the team doesn’t make the playoffs in 2023, they may spend heavily on free agency and replace Chaim Bloom, the chief baseball officer, who was just fired.
Signing Ohtani would put Boston in a wonderful position for years to future, given the team already has a top farm system in baseball (due in large part to Bloom) and a strong young core.
The two-way player’s contributions on the mound would be huge, but they won’t be immediately noticeable.
Ohtani would be a great addition to an already formidable Red Sox lineup, but he won’t be able to throw again until 2025 after undergoing surgery to repair his UCL.
There is little doubt that adding Ohtani would vastly strengthen the team’s squad. However, Boston will need to figҺt over where to put their resources if they want to get back into the game.
