The players of Manchester United are upset over the departure of David de Gea, especially since Andre Onana has not been able to adequately fill his shoes.
After 12 years of service at United, De Gea, now 32, was let go from the organization in July. The Spaniard appeared in 545 games and won eight trophies while playing for Manchester United, including the Premier League title. However, he is currently unattached to any team because he was unable to sign with a new club over the summer.
Onana, who had previously played for Erik ten Hag at Ajax, has taken over as the starting goalkeeper for Manchester United after De Gea’s departure. The Cameroon international, who is 27 years old, moved from Inter Milan to Old Trafford for a fee of £47 million. However, he has not yet managed to convince United fans that he is the genuine deal.
After allowing Leroy Sane’s shot to go between his legs during United’s 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, Onana extended his sincere condolences to the fans of the club. He has had a rough start at United, having given up 14 goals in his first six games there, but he is keen to “learn” from his struggles.
The players at United are reportedly outraged about the manner in which the club handled De Gea, as reported by The Sun. The veteran goalkeeper was well liked by his teammates at Old Trafford and was awarded the Premier League Golden Glove for the previous campaign.
Even though De Gea was subject to criticism at United, he was able to accomplish a great deal there. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has matched his record of four times being named United’s Player of the Year. He held that record longer than anybody else. That puts him ahead of players like Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney, who each have two victories to their names.
The fact that De Gea was selected as United’s Players’ Player of the Year on four separate occasions demonstrates how highly he was regarded by his teammates. Nobody one has even come close to winning that honor three times, let alone four times. “You know what I think about you and how much I will miss you bro,” United captain Bruno Fernandes said to De Gea on Instagram after the latter’s departure from the team.
After the club’s acquisition of Onana, it is quite improbable that De Gea will make an unexpecteԀ return to Old Trafford. The goalkeeper took responsibility for his error by speaking to the press after it occurred against Bayern, and he will likely want to demonstrate his worth in the Premier League.
After his mistake, Onana was quoted as saying to TNT Sports, “This is the life of a goalkeeper.” It’s not an easy task. We got off to an excellent start. Because of my error, we are no longer in control of the game. It is a challenging circumstance for all of us, but particularly for me because I am the member of the team who has let everyone down.
“We were very good with the ball, they didn’t create any chances, and I made a mistake on their first shot on target,” the coach said. It was the deciding factor, and the team’s failure to capitalize on it led to their defeat. It is entirely my fault that we were not successful today.
“I have to grow from this experience and be resilient. I have a lot of things to demonstrate. My beginning in Manchester has not been very successful, at least not in the way that I had hoped. This was one of the worst games I’ve ever played.
