Erik ten Hag’s Bayern side suffered their fourth defeat in five games, with the 4-3 scoreline not fully reflecting the Bundesliga giants’ dominance during the eventful 90 minutes.
United, akin to their performance against Brighton the previous weekend, kicked off the game with vigor. However, their early momentum was halted by Leroy Sane’s 28th-minute opener, largely due to a glaring mistake by Onana.
Despite the power behind the former Manchester City winger’s long-range shot, the Cameroon international was at fault for letting the ball slip through his hands and into the net.
Just four minutes later, United conceded another goal when Serge Gnabry was granted free rein in the penalty area. From that point on, it became an arduous task to recover in the match. Onana, who faced challenges in the early stages of his Manchester United career, took responsibility for his performance after the game, acknowledging the ups and downs of being a goalkeeper.
He stated, “This is the life of a goalkeeper. It’s difficult. We started very well. After my mistake, we lost control of the game. It’s a tough situation for us, especially for me, as I’m the one who let the team down. We were excellent on the ball, and they didn’t create any chances. Their first shot on target, I made a mistake. It was the turning point, and the team suffered because of that mistake. If we didn’t win today, it was because of me.”
United’s captain, Fernandes, on the other hand, offered support to David de Gea’s successor and emphasized that defeat is always a collective responsibility.
Fernandes remarked, “Andre is an excellent goalkeeper. He will continue to earn us many points and make numerous saves. He doesn’t need to shoulder the blame for anything. We, as a team, must take responsibility. We will navigate through this challenging period together because we are strong as a team.”
