Kylian Mbappe’s scintillating goal-scoring form continues as he notched another goal, taking his tally to eight in just five appearances for Luis Enrique’s team this season.
The French superstar displayed his prowess once more as Paris Saint-Germain launched their Champions League campaign with a resounding 2-0 home victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, offering a glimpse of what could be achieved under their new coach, Luis Enrique.
Mbappe initiated the scoring with a second-half penalty, and Achraf Hakimi extended the lead with a splendid goal, demonstrating PSG’s patience and their commitment to Enrique’s possession-oriented style at the Parc des Princes.
The win marked only the third victory in six competitive matches this season for the reigning Ligue 1 champions, providing much-needed relief following their recent defeat over the weekend as they diligently executed Enrique’s tactics. PSG currently leads Group F with three points, holding a two-point advantage over AC Milan and Newcastle, who played to a goalless draw earlier on Tuesday.
While PSG’s performance may not have been characterized by brilliance during their inaugural grand outing of the season, their midfield dominance ensured they were seldom under threat. The turning point arrived early in the second half when Mbappe calmly dispatched a penalty, putting PSG ahead just four minutes into the second half. This marked his 11th goal in his last nine appearances in the Champions League.
Dortmund had an early opportunity when Donyell Malen found space in PSG’s area, but his shot was comfortably saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG responded five minutes later when Vitinha, who controlled the midfield in the first half, struck the woodwork with a superb long-range shot. The Portuguese midfielder had another chance after the half-hour mark, but his attempt was deflected over the bar.
PSG lacked a cutting edge until early in the second half when Ousmane Dembele, combining with full-back Hakimi on the right flank, located Mbappe in the box. The French forward’s shot was handled by Niklas Sule, leading to a penalty that Mbappe confidently converted.
In the 58th minute, Hakimi furthered PSG’s lead with a delicate chip using the outside of his boot, capitalizing on a brilliant setup by Vitinha. PSG maintained control over the final 30 minutes of the match, securing a clean sheet as Borussia failed to mount any significant threats.
