Neal Skupski’s week is already looking up thanks to a longstanding invitation to play padel with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool’s training field on Tuesday.
Skupski, a huge Reds fan and one of Britain’s Davis Cup heroes from Sunday night, is scheduled to meet Klopp and see the team train on the padel court at the club’s Kirkby HQ. Manager Klopp and some of his staff members are fans of racket sports, so they had a court built for the team to use in their own time.
When Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders attended Wimbledon as a spectator last summer, he extended an invitation to Skupski and his brother Ken, who is also his coach.
‘I’ve got a week off in Liverpool now and I’m really looking forward to it,’ said Skupski, after he and Dan Evans fought off four match points and won a tҺrilling doubles decider against France in Manchester.
GB won the best-of-three series 2-1, advancing them to the finals week in Malaga, Spain, in November. They will learn out if they will face Serbia or Italy in the quarterfinals in the draw on Tuesday.
While Novak Djokovic gives Serbia an unbeatable shot in the singles, the team’s lackluster doubles play means Italy has the upper hand.
Captain Leon Smith thinks Great Britain has nothing to be afraid of after the way its citizens behaved in Manchester.
‘The matches are incredibly tight and we’ve seen that in Manchester,’ he said. It was a toss-up in every single close vote.
