This week, Jose Bordalas said that Greenwood’s friend and Real Madrid star Bellingham ‘recommended’ him to sign for Getafe on loan.
Speaking to RadioMarca, he remarked, “It was a surprise, we never thought we could get a player like that” when referring to the striker’s loan acquisition from Manchester United. We didn’t think it was going to work out financially, but they reached out to our sports director Ruben Reyes and they and he discussed it.
Greenwood encouraged Bellingham to join the Spanish league because the two are buddies.
On Sunday, Greenwood made his Getafe debut in a 3-2 victory over Osasuna. He entered the game late off the bench.
He helped secure the win by earning the corner kιck that set up the game-winning goal scored by Nemanja Maksimovic in the 86th minute.
But after the game, Bordalas recanted his statements suggesting a connection between Greenwood and Bellingham.
“I had said that Mason Greenwood came to Getafe because he had spoken with Jude Bellingham,” the Getafe manager clarified.
“They assured me that wasn’t the case,” the speaker said.
After being suspended by Manchester United in January 2022, Greenwood made his first competitive appearance 20 months later in a late cameo against Osasuna.
After conducting an internal inquiry into Greenwood’s behavior, the Premier League giants decided in a statement that he would “recommence his career… away from Old Trafford” on loan with the Spanish club.
The team announced his departure in August, and on transfer deadline day, he made the move to Getafe on loan.
Man United will explore permanent offers for Greenwood, who is under contract until 2025, although the striker is not likely to play for the club again.
