Matheus Nunes will bring so many skills’ to Manchester City, according to Pep Guardiola, but he has already identified one weakness in his style of play.
Nunes was purchased by Man City from Wolves during the summer transfer period. After being an unutilized substitute in their first game following his signing, he will be looking to make his club debut when they return from the international break.
But other newcomers have had trouble adjusting to Guardiola’s style of play in their first seasons at the Etihad Stadium, with the obvious exception of Erling Haaland, before becoming more refined in the future.
And as Guardiola made clear at a news conference on Friday, he has already expressed displeasure with one part of his new hire’s playing style.
Nunes can play as a holding midfielder, an offensive midfielder, or even a full-back, according to Guardiola.
“His first touch needs to be better; it isn’t yet up to par. He played the last games with Wolves as a winger and has good energy. He has so many positive traits.
He has good dribbling skills and will eventually learn how to use his first touch more precisely. He’ll learn it.
Nunes is greatly admired by Guardiola.
Guardiola has long been a fan of Nunes, despite there being room for improvement. The Portugal international made an impact on his current manager even before he joined Wolves in the Premier League.
Nunes was dubbed “one of the best players in the world” by Guardiola after competing for Sporting versus City in the Champions League.
Now that he has a contract through 2028, he will be looking to prove his worth to Guardiola’s team.
Guardiola made his remarks in anticipation of Saturday’s 3 p.m. kickoff when City travels to West Ham United. There may be a chance for Nunes to make his midfield debut with Kevin De Bruyne and fellow newcomer Mateo Kovacic also out injured.
