Gareth Southgate defends Harry Maguire after own goal vs Scotland

A crucial part of his defense.

His future, however, appears brighter at Old Trafford.

Like Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace, if Harry Maguire isn’t playing regularly for his club, he won’t be a first-team selection for England under Gareth Southgate.

The aim to humiliate Maguire is expanding beyond mere farce, as seen by an own goal scored by Scotland in the 67th minute. While the boos from the Scotland faithful when he replaced Guehi at halftime were to be expected, the vitriol he received from his own fans was completely inappropriate.

After England’s 2-1 victory against Scotland, Tim Spiers of The Athletic reported that Southgate was asked about Maguire on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“It’s because he’s been treated ridiculously for so long. It’s ridiculous; I’ve never heard of a player being treated that poorly by any group of fans, whether they are Scots or Americans.

“I’ve never seen anything like it.”Moreover, Southgate stated that he had “absolutely no complaint” with the Scotland fans getting at Maguire, as this is just part of football culture in general.

The guts and determination he displays every time he takes the field is phenomenal. Tonight, our fans were outstanding in their support of him, and we are all with him.

Even though it wasn’t the case tonight at Hampden Park, I think it’s worse that Maguire receives this from his own fans as well.

No, not even by United’s standards
