Shohei Ohtani, star player for the Los Angeles Angels, was held out of the lineup for a tenth consecutive game on Tuesday due to a right oblique strain.
Until Ohtani gives the signal that he is ready to play, Angels manager Phil Nevin has said he will continue to play without him in the lineup.
“He’s going to come in and tell me one day he’s ready to play and then he’ll play,” Nevin said.
Ohtani was scheduled to start Monday’s series opener in Seattle, but he was removed from the lineup following a successful pregame exercise. Nevin stated that the Angels would most likely think about putting Ohtani back into the lineup on Friday, when they begin a home series against the Detroit Tigers.
But Nevin said there would be talk about bringing Ohtani back in the lineup for Wednesday’s day game in Seattle if he stepped into the clubhouse and claimed he was ready.
“When he’s ready to play,” Nevin said, “when he feels comfortable swinging, then he’s going to play.” When I put his nаme in writing, it actually appears better. Whoever’s on your side is fine with me. Even when we’re at home, I know there will be supporters waiting to see him. I understand your anguish.”
Before the Angels’ 6-3 loss to the Orioles early last week, Ohtani was wоunded during batting practice.
Ohtani’s pitching career is over for the year. He has torn a ligament in his pitching elbow and will need surgery soon.
After this season, Ohtani will be a free agent. He has a.304 average, 44 home runs, 95 RBIs, 20 steals, and a.308 OBP. And in 23 starts on the mound, he’s 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA, putting himself in excellent position to win his second AL MVP award in as many years.
