The New York Yankees’ pitching staff has been strengthened.
Starting pitcher Luke Weaver was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners by the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
Since the Yankees have already disclosed the season-ending injuries of Luis Severino and Nestor Cortes Jr., acquiring Weaver strengthens their starting rotation. To create room for Weaver on the 40-man roster, New York placed Cortes Jr. on the 60-day injured list.
Weaver had a 6.77 earned run average over 110.1 innings thrown in season with the Reds and Mariners. He made 22 starts and 4 relief appearances. Whether the Yankees will utilize him as a starter or a reliever for the rest of the season is up in the air.
Weaver, now 30 years old, was a first-round choice by the MLB in 2014. With a career record of 26-41 with an earned run average of 5.18 in 141 games, he has fallen short of expectations.
New York Yankees Lose Star Reliever to IL
New York Yankees starting pitchers have suffered another loss.
Strong-armed reliever Right elbow discomfort forced the 15-day disabled list stint for Jonathan Loaisiga. Because of this, he will probably miss the rest of the season.
Earlier this week, the Yankees announced the indefinite absence of relievers Ian Hamilton (groin) and Keynan Middleton (shoulder irritation).
The Yankees’ starting pitcher, Nestor Cortes, will also be out for the year with a shoulder/rotator cuff ιnjury.
Loaisiga, meanwhile, was out for three months due to a bоne spur in his right elbow that required surgical removal.
It is hoped that Loaisiga does not have another bоne spur that needs to be removed after he was placed on the IL in April for the same inflammatory condition in his right elbow.
In 17.2 innings pitched this year, the 28-year-old posted a 3.06 ERA and 0.849 WҺIP.
The Yankees are crossing their fingers that he can come back healthy and contribute to the bullpen next year.
