A Manchester City player twice reverses his decision to withdraw from international play

According to England manager Gareth Southgate, Kyle Walker has thought about leaving international football twice.

The Manchester City right-back scored his country’s first goal during Saturday’s draw with Ukraine. He is about to sign a new deal at the Etihad Stadium after heated negotiations with Pep Guardiola.

At the Stadion Miejski in Wroclaw, Walker countered Oleksandr Zinchenko’s early goal as England drew their most recent European Championship qualifying match.

With the UEFA European Championship in Germany in 2024 just around the corner, the Three Lions will wrap up their September international break on Tuesday with a friendly match against Scotland at Hampden Park.

Kyle Walker, 33, has been playing for England since his senior debut in November 2011 and will compete in his most recent event for the country next summer.

Walker played a significant role in both the World Cups in Qatar and Russia and was a member of the England team that lost the 2021 Euro Final to Italy at Wembley Stadium.

Over the summer, there were rumors that the Englishman might leave the Etihad Stadium, with Bayern Munich being quite interested in the Manchester City right-back.

The defender was successfully persuaded to remain with the treble-winners by Pep Guardiola, while England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that he had to talk Walker out of quitting international football twice.

The current England head coach admitted, “It’s always all credit to him and I’ve persuaded him out of retirement twice.

Confident Kyle Walker fires eye-opening warning to Man City's Premier League title rivals - Mirror Online

“I think he enjoys being here and has wanted to keep going, but now that international football is over, after the Euros and after the World Cup, he’s thinking about how many caps he can earn.

He is essential to us. He most likely belongs to the category of “world-class players in their position” on our team.

“I believe he was unaware of the value we place on him or how crucial he is to our success. He won’t likely appreciate me for revealing it, I’m afraid.

It doesn’t always happen, but he has [become better with age], in my opinion, not just while playing but also while participating in training, speaking in interviews, and having an impact on the group. He has developed into a truly mature leader for us.

“But also his influence on the group’s younger players, and the way he practiced all week. He was selected to play against Ukraine because of his all-around talent, excellent composure in a position where you don’t often find it, and our experienced players.

Walker has 77 senior England caps and has won 15 titles with Manchester City since joining them from Tottenham in 2017. He also continues to have success at the club level.
