What we learn about Ben Chilwell’s England performance at left-back

Chelsea fans expressed their approval of Ben Chilwell’s performance at left-back during England’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine on Saturday.

Although Chilwell has been playing in a left-wing role this season, he returned to his natural left-back position for the match against Serhiy Rebrov’s team. Despite England not securing all three points, Chelsea supporters commended Chilwell’s performance on Twitter and questioned Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to deploy him in a different position.

It’s challenging to discern the reasoning behind Pochettino’s choice to play Chilwell in an attacking role. While Chilwell can contribute effectively in attack, as demonstrated by his assist for Axel Disasi’s goal against Liverpool earlier in the season, it seems illogical to field a player primarily known as a left-back in the forward line when there are natural attackers like Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke available.

Although Mudryk has struggled to find form since joining Chelsea and Madueke dealt with an injury issue in preseason, it might be time for Pochettino to reconsider this tactical adjustment, especially given Chelsea’s disappointing start to the season. Chelsea fans may be eager to see either Mudryk, Madueke, or new signing Cole Palmer starting in attack after the international break, ahead of Chilwell.
