The top 10 biggest spending teams of the 21st century have been revealed, including 6 clubs currently competing in the Premier League.
In the list of the 10 biggest spending teams of the 21st century, it is no surprise that Chelsea took the top spot after spending more than £1 billion since Todd Boehly took over last year. According to statistics, the Blues have spent more than 3 billion pounds on player purchases in the 21st century, but in the opposite direction, they also earned 1.7 billion pounds from selling players.
That means Chelsea’s net spending stands at £1.54 billion. Ranked 2nd is Man City. The Blues have spent £2.35 billion since 2000. They have also collected £855 million from player liquidations, which puts the Manchester team’s net expenditure at £1.45 billion. In third place is another Manchester team – MU. The Red Devils’ net spending is at £1.36 billion. PSG is slightly less than MU, at 1.11 billion pounds. Ranked fifth is Real Madrid, who have spent a net of £855m since 2000.
Another Spanish team, Barca, ranked 7th, their net spending over the past 23 years stood at 813 million pounds. Arsenal sandwiched between the two Spanish teams, the Gunners’ net spending stood at £852 million, £3 million less than Real Madrid’s. The Gunners have spent more than £200 million this summer alone and about £574 million since Mikel Arteta took charge in December 2019. The North London team is also the club that earned the least amount of money from player sales in the Top 10, with £695m since 2000.
Tottenham and Liverpool help the Premier League have 6 representatives in the Top 10, while AC Milan ranks 9th with a net spend of 678 million pounds. According to statistics, 781 players have left the Rossoneri since 2000 – more than any other club in the Top 10.
