Rookie Jasson Dominguez of the New York Yankees, who had a strong debut in the Major Leagues earlier this month, will sit out the rest of the year with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday.
To fix his elbow, Dominguez will need Tommy John surgery.
The Yankees promoted the switch-hitting outfielder on September 1 and he made an immediate impact during a road trip against the Houston Astros.
Dominguez, who goes by the nickname “The Martian,” did not disappoint in his Major League Baseball debut.
On his very first at-bat in the major leagues, Dominguez Һit a home run against Justin Verlander, sending the ball over the deep left field wall at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.
Since starting his first homestand against the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers, the 20-year-old had homered three times, including twice at Yankee Stadium.
Sunday’s Yankees lineup had Dominguez batting third, but he was removed from the lineup approximately 15 minutes before the first pitch. Dominguez’s elbow was scanned, and the results were visible, as mentioned by Boone. Tommy John surgery is necessary for him.
This is a devastating setback for one of the team’s best prospects, as recovery from Tommy John surgery often takes a year.
Dominguez may have made the team for the upcoming season’s debut.
Instead, the Yankees will be keeping tabs on Dominguez while they wait for him to recover from arm surgery.
Eight of Dominguez’s 31 hits have gone for extra bases, and he has driven in seven runs. Adding to his eight strikeouts and two walks, he also walked twice.
