A setback to the Brewers ruins the Yankees’ day of joy

On Saturday morning, the Yankees kicked off a weekend of festivities honoring one of their most successful seasons ever.

The group then took yet more step toward its all-time low point.

On Old-Timers’ Day, when the 1998 Yankees were celebrated for their 114-win championship season, the 2023 team won a game and moved closer to becoming the first team in the franchise’s history to end with a losing record in more than three decades.

A two and a half hour rain delay, a Little League home run by Milwaukee’s Willy Adames, and a late meltdown led to a 9-2 loss for the Yankees against the Brewers.

But at least the game-ending home run went over the wall.

To start the bottom of the eighth inning, Tyrone Taylor crushed a 1-0 fastball from Jonathan Loaisiga into the left field seats, sending the Brewers ahead, 3-2.

The relationship between Loaisiga and the Yankees crumbled rapidly after that. After singles by Sal Frelick and William Contreras, two more runs scored when bloops by Carlos Santana and Mark Canha dropped in front of the outfielders.

The third run of the inning was scored when Victor Caratini Һit a sacrifice fly, on another ball that nearly dropped because of a miscommunication between the outfielders.

Somehow, things got much worse in the bottom of the ninth.

There was a palpable sense of despondency in the Stadium as the Yankees surrendered four runs on five hits and five walks from Ron Marinaccio with the bases loaded.

In the fourth inning, the Brewers went up by two runs.

Canha got things started with a single, and then Adames drove a ball over Giancarlo Stanton’s head in right field.

Stanton’s relay to third base fell into the camera well, allowing Adames to score even though DJ LeMahieu had intercepted his throw.

The Yankees managed to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza.

That, along with a few minutes of sunshine, improved the mood inside Yankee Stadium.

Until Aaron Judge’s seventh-inning single, the Yankees’ two singles were their only hits of the game.

Even Yankees rookie Jasson Dominguez, the team’s best hope at the moment, struck out looking three times.

The Yankees benefited greatly from Michael King’s pitching performance.

By allowing just one earned run оver five innings while striking out nine in his fifth start of the season, King strengthened his case to remain in the rotation in 2024 after teammate Luis Severino was placed on the injured list.

The Yankees’ 70-72 record was the closest thing to a bright spot, but the 44,068 paying fans who waited for hours to see their home club lose are unlikely to agree.
