Second baseman Jonathan India and first baseman Joey Votto have both been sent to Triple-A Louisville to start rehab assignments.

The Cincinnati Reds have sent second baseman Jonathan India and first baseman Joey Votto to Triple-A Louisville on rehab assignments, the club announced Friday.

India has been on the 10-day injured list since July 29 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Votto hit the 10-day injured list himself on Aug. 24 due to left shoulder discomfort.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Gordon Wittenmyer, India is expected to rejoin the Reds’ lineup Tuesday – barring a setback – while Votto’s timeline has yet to be determined.

India was batting .251 with 14 home runs, 52 RBI, 12 stolen bases, a .744 OPS and a 1.1 WAR in the 103 games he played before going down. The 26-year-old former first round pick won NL Rookie of the Year in 2021.

Votto, the 2010 NL MVP, did not make his season debut until June 19 due to left biceps and left rotator cuff surgeries. In 51 games this year, Votto was hitting .200 with 13 home runs, 33 RBI, a .459 OPS and a 0.0 WAR.

The Reds have hung around in the NL Wild Card race without two of their biggest stars, thanks in large part to the seemingly endless supply of rookie infielders who have joined the lineup this summer. Even after NL Rookie of the Year dark horse Matt McLain joined India and Votto on the injured list, Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Noelvi Marte all stepped up to keep Cincinnati afloat.

As it stands, the Reds are 0.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final NL Wild Card spot. The Miami Marlins are also 0.5 games out of the playoff picture, while the San Francisco Giants are an additional 2.0 games back.
