Evan Carter of the Texas Rangers hits in his first MLB at-bat

Evan Carter, the top prospect for the Texas Rangers, singled against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.

Adolis Garca, an outfielder, was replaced by Carter after being elevated to the active roster due to a patellar tendon injury.

Carter started the game in right field and almost reached the plate in the first inning when there were runners on base. Josh Smith’s flyout, though, put a stop to that chance.

With the score knotted at 2-2, Carter took the plate in the second inning against Athletics starter Paul Blackburn.

After getting Blackburn to a 2-2 count, Carter singled on the following pitch down the right-field line.

Carter then advanced to second base by stealing it, putting first baseman Nathaniel Lowe in scoring position. Lowe then drew a walk to put two runners on for Mitch Garver, who was filling in at cleanup for Garca.

Jonah Heim entered the game with the bases loaded after Garver took a walk. Carter was left at third base after Heim struck out to conclude the inning.

The Elizabethton, Tennessee, native, who was a relative unknown when the Rangers used a second-round pick on him in the 2020 MLB Draft, hit.288/.413/.450/.863 this season with Double-A Frisco and Round Rock, with 17 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs, and 67 RBI.

Prior to that, he played in Class-A baseball for the most of the 2021 season and had success there as well.

He was the Rangers’ 2022 Minor League Player of the Year and received a Minor League Gold Glove for his performance in center field last season. He is not only the Rangers’ top prospect, but also one of baseball’s top 10 prospects overall.
