Portugal vs Slovakia player ratings: Superstar Man United brilliantly rescued Portugal when Ronaldo faded in Euro qualifiers

In spite of his team’s underwhelming overall performance, the Manchester United midfielder was instrumental in helping his team earn a victory.

Portugal secured a crucial road victory to boost their chances of qualifying for Euro 2024 with the help of a fantastic goal from Bruno Fernandes, who also provided consistent inspiration. On a night when Cristiano Ronaldo continually struggled, he made the difference as the Selecao stumbled to a 1-0 victory.

Slovakia put two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of play, showing some promising early signs. With their own opportunity, Portugal retaliated, but Bruno Fernandes’ feeble attempt was easily stopped. But when given another chance, he didn’t fumble. On the cusp of halftime, the Manchester United midfielder drove the ball into the bottom corner after slicing through the Slovakia defense to give Portugal a 1-0 lead.

Ivan Schranz had a clear look at goal for the hosts early in the second half, but he skewed it outside the post. However, Portugal remained generally at ease during the rest of the game, despite being rather unproductive in front of goal. Ronaldo squandered a few opportunities and may have been fortunate to escape with his life after tumbling dangerously in front of Martin Dubravka.

Although Slovakia never truly attacked at the other end as time expired, Portugal’s defense was still effective enough to hold them off. The Selecao must play better going forward and will undoubtedly require more from their skipper, but they will undoubtedly accept a challenging away victory.

Portugal’s Tehelne Pole players are rated by GOAL…

keeper and defense

7/10 for Diogo Costa

Had only a couple saves to make and appeared at ease whole game. It’s difficult to keep a clean sheet there.

David Dalot (6/10):

While strong defensively, the offense is lackluster. not the finest relationship with Bernardo Silva.

8/10 for Ruben Dias

exhibited dominance at the back to build on his strong start to the season.

Silva, Antonio (6/10)

The teenager had a difficult evening as the home team continuously picked on him. But it’s good to see him receive some time.

6/10 for Joao Cancelo

I tried to ping the ball around a bit and enjoyed some terrific forward runs. Has yet to regain the form that made him such a threat for Man City 18 months ago.

Midfield

(6) Joao Pahlinha

Despite his typical enthusiasm, he didn’t always time his tackles. At least three possible bookings were possible.

(7.0/10) Bernardo Silva

Despite having few chances to produce, she helped Fernandes score. It is unknown if he and Vitinha can play together in the same XI. After the PSG player exploded, he significantly improved.

8/10 for Bruno Fernandes

took his goal admirably after initially failing to get involved. In the second half, his influence increased and he became the most dangerous offensive threat for his team. A good showing from the birthday boy.

Attack

(5/10) Vitinha

Being constantly alert yet not extremely productive. Certainly deserved the start based on his performances for PSG, but he didn’t contribute enough to warrant keeping his place in the starting lineup.

Cristiano Ronaldo (5.0/10)

Not in top form. Though his movement was as efficient as can be expected, he was unsuccessful in front of goal. Fortunately, the goaltender was not sent off for a careless challenge. He had enormous expectations, but he did not live up to them.

(7/10) Rafael Leao

started a number of great forward runs and posed a continuous threat when in possession of the ball. Sadly, I was replaced after 60 minutes.

Manager and Subs

(6) Nelson Semedo

Developed smoothly and kept things straightforward.

(Otavio) 5/10

For 25 minutes, I felt very anonymous.

(6) Pedro Neto

provided crucial wing speed in his fourth international appearance.

(7/10) Roberto Martinez

deployed a back four for the first time in qualification, which greatly increased Portugal’s effectiveness. His team didn’t exactly have a powerful attack, but they played solid defense and found opportunities to advance. He’ll accept all three points.
