The Spanish national team crushed Georgia 7-1 on Friday to get their Euro 2024 qualification campaign back on track, with Lamine Yamal becoming their youngest-ever player and goal scorer.
Spain dropped to fourth place in Group A after losing to group leaders Scotland in their second match, but they moved up to second with a decisive victory in Tbilisi, propelled by a hat-trick from Alvaro Morata.
Despite the Atletico Madrid forward’s treble, Yamal’s outstanding debut for his country at the age of 16 years and 57 days will go down in history as the game’s most memorable moment.
After 43 minutes, with Spain up 4-0 and cruising, the Barcelona teen and Nico Williams came off the bench to replace injured Marco Asensio and Dani Olmo.
In the 74th minute, Yamal scored a devastating goal to give Spain a 7-1 lead after Williams found him with a cut-back.
The president of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, was suspended by FIFA and accused of sexual assault by Spanish prosecutors when he forcedly kissed women’s midfielder Jenni Hermoso, casting a shadow on the build-up to the game.
Despite winning the women’s World Cup in August, Rubiales’ conduct at the medal ceremony in Sydney and the ensuing controversy left Spain’s federation in a state of astonishment.
The pressure on men’s coach Luis de La Fuente decreased after he hailed Rubiales after he refused to retire by leading the team to Nations League victory in June.
The federation reaffirmed their support for the manager, who took over for Luis Enrique in December following Spain’s unsuccessful World Cup campaign in Qatar.
De la Fuente promised to attack in a similar manner, but with a more direct approach, and that was evident in Morata’s goal, which came after 22 minutes when the forward headed in a cross from Asensio.
Solomon Kvirkvelia put Fabian Ruiz’s cross into his own goal, giving Spain a bigger lead.
In the 38th minute, Olmo scored the third goal, beating Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Morata added the fourth following a deft pass from Ruiz.
Before halftime, Spain was obliged to switch out both of its wingers, and Yamal joyfully seized the opportunity to make history.
Giorgi Chakvetadze of Watford scored the first goal for Georgia, drilling a shot past Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon as the ball squirmed away from him in the rain.
After Williams scored a beautiful sixth with a solo dribble and finish, Morata restored Spain’s substantial lead with the help of a deflection.
With his own excellent strike, Yamal sealed the victory and added another piece of history.
On Tuesday in Granada, Spain plays Cyprus in another Euro 2024 qualifying match.
