Texas Rangers announce their probable pitchers for the Athletic Series

The three-game series between the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics, which begins on Friday at Globe Life Field, has its starting pitchers determined.

In the American League West, the Rangers (76-63) were pursuing the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros.

On Friday, the Rangers’ Jordan Montgomery (8-10, 3.46) will face the Athletics’ Paul Blackburn (4-4, 3.81) in the starting lineup.

On Saturday, Montgomery faced the Twins in his final start and received a no-decision. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and six runs, six of which were earned, almost all of which came in the fourth inning. He didn’t strike out, yet he did walk two. He has made six starts for the Rangers and has a record of 2-1, 3.60 ERA, 35 innings pitched, 30 strikeouts, and seven walks.

Blackburn made his final start on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, winning it after five innings and one earned run on four hits. He had four strikeouts and three walks. In his previous seven starts, he is 3-2 with a 2.38 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and 14 walks over 41 2/3 innings.

Although the Athletics have not named a likely starter for this Saturday, the Rangers plan to start Jon Gray (8-7, 3.85). The right-hander’s most recent start, on Sunday against Minnesota, ended in a no-decision. During his five innings of work, he allowed seven hits and three earned runs. He also had eight strikeouts and four walks. Gray has made seven starts in his previous seven, going 2-2 with a 5.26 ERA, 45 strikeouts, and 15 walks across 39.1 innings.

In 4 2/3 innings of work against Houston on Monday, Heaney took the loss despite allowing five hits and three earned runs. He had one strikeout and four walks. In his last seven starts, he is 2-0 with a 2.90 ERA, 32 strikeouts, and 11 walks over 31 innings. For the first time in his career, he is just one victory away from reaching 10 in a season.

Tuesday against Toronto, Medina received a no-decision after allowing three hits and three earned runs in four and a third innings. He had three strikeouts and three walks. He has a 1.01 record, a 3.77 ERA, 29 strikeouts, 14 walks, and 31 innings pitched across his last seven games.

The Rangers travel for a week to play the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Guardians after their game against the Athletics. Texas is trailing the Blue Jays in the Wild Card race by one-half of a game.

Saturday and Sunday will both start at 1:35 p.m. CT, while Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
