September 8 – Ryan Pepiot pitched a perfect game through six and a third innings and only allowed one hit through seven innings as the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Miami Marlins 10-0 on Thursday to escape a three-game sweep.
In order to fill Julio Urias’ rotation position while he is out on administrative leave following his arrest earlier this week on suspicion of felony domestic abuse, Pepiot was added to the Dodgers’ roster earlier on Thursday.
Before Josh Bell ruined Pepiot’s attempt at perfection with a crisp ground-ball single to center field with two outs in the eighth, the Marlins had their first 20 batters retired in a row. After that, Pepiot retired Jazz Chisholm Jr., ending Miami’s six-game winning streak.
Pepiot (2-0)’s longest outing in 13 major league appearances over two seasons included seven innings and three strikeouts. Right-hander Evan Phillips pitched a scoreless ninth inning after left-hander Caleb Ferguson had a hitless eighth inning.
Pepiot attempted to throw the Dodgers’ first no-hitter since a team effort that was launched by Walker Buehler in May 2018. Sandy Koufax pitched the only perfect game in Dodgers history in September 1965.
Amed Rosario scored two runs, while Chris Taylor led the Dodgers’ offense with a home run and five RBIs. With his 52nd double of the year, Freddie Freeman tied a Dodgers franchise record with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Smith’s RBI single in the third inning gave the Dodgers (85-54) a 1-0 lead, and Taylor’s RBI single in the fifth inning made it 2-0. In the sixth, Enrique Hernandez added an RBI double.
Later in the sixth, Rosario added a two-run single, giving Los Angeles a 4-0 advantage following Freeman’s RBI double. Taylor increased his advantage to 7-0 with an RBI double in the sixth and to 10-0 with a three-run home run in the eighth. Taylor hit his 15th home run of the year and second of the series.
After hitting seven home runs in the first two games of the series and outscoring the Dodgers 17-7, the Marlins (72-68) were restrained.
