September 6 – In the first game of a three-game series, the Miami Marlins defeated the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 6-3 thanks to a tiebreaking two-run home run by Bryan De La Cruz and a home run by Jazz Chisholm Jr.
The Marlins (71-67) added home runs from Jake Burger and Josh Bell and won their fifth straight game to maintain their lead in the National League wild-card race. Miami came in with a half-game deficit to the third and final wild-card place in the NL.
Jesus Luzardo, a left-hander for the Marlins, pitched six innings and surrendered two runs on four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. Tanner Scott blanked the Dodgers in the ninth for his fifth save, and Andrew Nardi (7-1) tossed a scoreless eighth inning to secure the victory.
For the Dodgers (84-53), Chris Taylor hit a home run while Freddie Freeman and Will Smith each scored a run.
Clayton Kershaw of Los Angeles, a left-hander, pitched five innings and allowed three runs on five hits while also walking five and striking out three. Since he was activated from the injured list on August 10 following a shoulder injury, he has made five starts, and the three runs allowed were the most in those starts.
By hitting RBI singles in the third inning off of Freeman and Smith, the Dodgers handed Kershaw an early 2-0 lead.
Burger’s solo home drive in the fourth inning, his 31st of the year and sixth since being acquired by the Marlins from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline, gave Miami its first run of the game.
In the fifth inning, Bell’s 20th home run, a two-run drive, gave Miami a 3-2 lead.
With Taylor’s 14th home run, the Dodgers tied the score at 3-3 in the eighth inning.
When Burger was struck by a pitch in the eighth inning with one out and De La Cruz blasted his 18th home run to left for a 5-3 lead, the Marlins got to Dodgers left-hander Ryan Yarbrough.
The last run was scored on Chisholm’s blast to right, his 15th home run.
Yarbrough (7-6) fell to 3-1 after allowing three runs on three hits in three innings since being traded from the Kansas City Royals to the Dodgers at the trade deadline.
Max Muncy, the Dodgers’ third baseman, was out Sunday after hurting his left shoulder while taking a swing. One inning after being struck in the mask by a backswing, Los Angeles catcher Austin Barnes left the game in the eighth.
