Glenn Otto, a struggling reliever, appears to have reached his breaking point for the Texas Rangers

Before their matchup with the Houston Astros on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field, the Texas Rangers made the following roster changes:

Nathan Eovaldi, a right-handed pitcher, has returned from the 15-day injured list.Contract picked for right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy (#21) from Triple-A Round RockWith a left hamstring injury, right-handed pitcher Josh Sborz was placed on the 15-day injured list. Right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto was designated for assignment.

In his first start since July 18 against Tampa Bay, Eovaldi will take the mound against the Astros. A strained right forearm put him on the 15-day injured list between July 27 and September 4. Eovaldi leads the American League in complete games (T2nd, 2) and victories (T7th, 11) and has an 11-3 record with a 2.69 ERA in 19 games/starts for Texas this season. On July 11 in Seattle, he was chosen for the second time in his career to the American League All-Star Game roster.

Kennedy, 38, is back with the Rangers for a second time this season. From Opening Day to May 10, during his first stay with Texas, he was 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA (8 ER/10.0 IP) across 11 relief appearances. He was a non-roster invitee for the Rangers’ Opening Day roster for the second straight year. On June 20, Texas re-signed Kennedy to a minor league contract. Since late June, Kennedy has made 22 bullpen appearances for Triple-A Round Rock, posting a 1-0 record, a 3.51 ERA (10 ER/25.2 IP), and three saves. Kennedy has 19 strikeouts over 14.0 innings in his last 10 Triple-A appearances since August 1. On Sunday, he made his final pitch at Oklahoma City.

Sborz has made 42 bullpen appearances for the Rangers this year and has a 5-7 record and 5.80 ERA. His first day of eligibility for a return is September 20.

In six relief appearances spread across two stints with the Rangers this season—June 30-July 22 and Aug. 28-Sept. 4—Otto had no record and a 10.13 ERA. He has spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Round Rock while both on option and an injury rehabilitation assignment. In 10 games/6 starts, he has a 1-1 record with a 3.38 ERA (11 ER/29.1 IP). Otto has seven days to be released by the Rangers or outright sent to the minor leagues.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Jacob deGrom, Brett Martin, and Jake Odorizzi) on the 60-day Injured List.
