Kyle Walker declined the opportunity to join Harry Kane at Bayern Munich and instead agreed to a two-year deal with Manchester City.
The England defender for the Treble champions said he was “close” to joining the German powerhouses.
Walker’s contract was slated to expire next summer, but the 33-year-old now wants to call it a career at the Etihad.
In the back of my mind, I’ve always wanted to play for Manchester City, but I had to do what was best for me and my career, which was simply to sign with the team that would provide me the most playing time.
Why would you want to depart from such a club?
“I wasn’t going to a worse club, either.
“Considering how big Bayern Munich is and what Harry is doing and will do there, it wasn’t a step down; it was simply a matter of who provided me the years to compete at the highest level.
Even if it came close, it wasn’t meant to be. Why should I leave City if I will receive adequate playing time?
“That’s all I want because it would be exhausting to stay at home with the kids,”
Walker joined City in July 2017 after moving there for £50 million from Spurs. This is his sixth season there.
And Pep Guardiola, he has witnessed the departure of several superstars throughout that time.
In response to whether the Etihad CEO pressured him to sign a new contract, Walker emphasized: “The choice isn’t really about him.
He has made it plain that he won’t stop you if you want to do something different.
It sells itself, the club. I hope to stay here until the conclusion of my professional career.
“I don’t care about the money; I simply want to play. You might think that’s cliche, but my only concern is for my happiness.
