The three-game series between the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, which begins on Monday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, has only been officially assigned one pitching probable.
On Monday, left-hander Andrew Heaney LHP Andrew Heaney (9-6, 4.16) is scheduled to start for the Rangers. Heaney made his final start on Tuesday against the New York Mets, and he was given a no-decision. Five hits and no runs with earned runs were allowed in his 5 1/3 innings of work. He had seven strikeouts and one walk. He has a 3-0 record, a 2.87 ERA, 34 strikeouts, and 10 walks in 31 1/3 innings across his last seven starts. Although he doesn’t last long in games, he provides the Rangers with reliable pitching.
In the first game of the series, the Astros anticipate starting rookie J.P. France (10-5, 3.49). He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs in his last start, which he won on Tuesday against Boston. He had three strikeouts and one walk. He has a 5-2 record and a 4.23 ERA over his previous seven starts, participating in every decision. In his last 38.1 innings, he has walked 12 times and struck out 31 times.
The Rangers’ start times on Tuesday and Wednesday are not yet determined. The Rangers would start Max Scherzer on Wednesday and Dane Dunning on Tuesday based on the last turn in the rotation.
However, Nathan Eovaldi is being worked into the Rangers’ (76-60) rotation. The Rangers had flagged Wednesday as a potential day for Eovaldi to be activated and start because the right-hander had missed more than a month due to right forearm discomfort.
The second element is Scherzer. The right-hander claimed he had forearm discomfort in his previous start on Friday, and the Rangers decided to wait to decide on his next start until after his throwing session on Sunday.
In order to give Scherzer two more days of rest before the Rangers’ home series against the Oakland Athletics begins on Friday, the Rangers might start Dunning on Tuesday with standard rest before turning the ball over to Eovaldi on Wednesday. Alternately, if the Rangers feel confident in Scherzer’s position following his bullpen, Eovaldi could start on Tuesday and Scherzer on Wednesday.
Following the game on Sunday, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy noted that Scherzer “looks good right now” and that the team will know where they stand on Monday. Bochy added that the Rangers will decide their starter for Tuesday tomorrow.
For the Astros, Framber Valdez (10-9, 3.38) and Justin Verlander (10-7, 3.34) are anticipated to start on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
On Wednesday, Valdez faced Boston and won after pitching six innings of five-hit baseball. He did not walk while giving up two earned runs. He also got five outs. With a 4.57 ERA across his previous seven starts, he is 2-3. In 45 1/3 innings, he has walked 13 times and struck out 31 times. He had a no-hitter throughout that stretch.
Verlander just had a setback against the New York Yankees. Eight hits and six earned runs were allowed throughout his six innings of work. He had three strikeouts and one walk. This ended a four-game victory streak that had started on August 11th. Since joining the Astros, he has participated in all decisions and is 4-2 in six starts.
The game on Monday is scheduled for 3:05 p.m., while the games on Tuesday and Wednesday are both scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
