Shohei Ohtani’s performance on Sunday may have encapsulated his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani added yet another MLB record to his resume. And his entire team underwhelmed yet again.
Ohtani, who stole second base on Sunday, is only the eighth player in MLB history to Һit 40 home runs and steаl 20 bases in consecutive seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
The Athletics of Oakland beаt his team by a score of 10-6. With that, Oakland swept the Angels in a three-game series. In total, the Athletics swept the Angels by a 21-9 score.
The Athletics share baseball’s fewest wins this season with the Royals.
Once again, Ohtani’s exceptional talent was wasted on a losing cause. Ohtani has once again had an incredible season. It’s even more impressive considering Ohtani has been pitching with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow since August 23.
The Angels are 13.5 games back in the AL West and 12.5 games back from the second wild card slot in the AL.
The Angels were completely committed to making the playoffs not too long ago. At the trade deadline, they bolstered their roster in an effort to make the playoffs and convince Ohtani to remain with the team beyond the current campaign.
However, they had a terrible month in August, going 8-19. The Angels promptly changed course after realizing their postseason chances were dwindling. They changed strategies and dumped roughly a quarter of their squad onto the waiver wire in an obvious attempt to avoid paying MLB’s competitive balance tax.
Shohei Ohtani’s incomparable brilliance. The Los Angeles Angels’ ineptitude. A duo that’s all too familiar to baseball fans.
