Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has embarked on a loan journey to Spanish club Getafe as part of an effort by Manchester United to provide him with an opportunity to revive his career away from Old Trafford.
Greenwood faced suspension by United on January 30, 2022, in connection with allegations involving a young woman after images and videos were shared online. The 21-year-old was confronted with charges that included attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service revealed in February that the case had been dropped.
Reports suggesting United’s intention to retain him following an internal inquiry elicited strong public reactions, leading to the club’s recent announcement of a mutual decision for him to depart. Several clubs in Italy, Germany, and Turkey expressed interest, but Greenwood has now chosen to join LaLiga outfit Getafe on a season-long loan, pending international clearance.
In an official statement, Manchester United stated, “This move provides Greenwood with an opportunity to start rebuilding his career outside of Manchester United. The club will continue to extend its support to Mason and his family during this transitional period.”
According to media reports, Getafe is making a nominal contribution to Greenwood’s salary, with Manchester United’s primary focus being on finding a suitable environment for him to resume his professional career. An academy product, Greenwood scored a total of 35 goals in 129 appearances for Manchester United, with his last match for the club occurring on January 22, 2022, against West Ham.
