Chelsea reportedly expressed interest in signing Hugo Lloris from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window, according to The Telegraph. This move was initiated as Chelsea sought a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had moved to Real Madrid on a loan deal. Chelsea ultimately signed Robert Sanchez, who became their first-choice goalkeeper.
Despite their initial approach, Chelsea later acquired Djordje Petrovic from the New England Revolution. Lloris remained at Tottenham.
In hindsight, it appears that Chelsea made the right decision in choosing Petrovic over Lloris. Lloris, who earns £100,000-a-week according to Spotrac, is now 36 years old and past his prime. Given his long-standing role as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, it was unlikely that he would accept a backup position at Chelsea. Additionally, the intense rivalry between Chelsea and Tottenham would have made such a move even less likely.
Petrovic, at 23 years old, has the potential to develop into Chelsea’s top goalkeeper in the future, making him a more suitable choice for the club.
