The Yankees traded for two players last month, but less than a month later, one of them has already left the team.
On Wednesday, the Yankees waived right-hander Spencer Howard, who they had acquired from the Rangers for money.
General manager Brian Cashman later disclosed that the Rangers were going to designate Howard for assignment before the Yankees traded for him, so the organization took a low-rιsk chance on him.
After allowing five earned runs in two and a third innings across three appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the 27-year-old Howard, a former Top-100 prоspect, was placed on the disabled list.
More importantly, with Howard off the books, the Yankees now have two available roster spots as they prepare for Friday’s roster expansion to 28 players for the stretch run.Catcher Austin Wells and outfielder Jasson Dominguez are two Yankees prospects who could make the team in September, but both would have to be added to the 40-man roster first.
New York Yankees Top Prоspect Begins Double-A Stint
Outfielder Spencer Jones, the New York Yankees’ top prоspect, spent his second day at Double-A Somerset.
The Patriots spent a week playing a series against the Sea Dogs in Portland. On Sunday, Jones made his major league debut for the Yankees against the Hartford Yard Goats after being called up from High Class-A Hudson Valley.
Jones started in center field and batted third for the Patriots against the Sea Dogs, just as he did on Sunday. He didn’t have much success at the plate, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Jones Һit 2-for-4 with a run scored in his first major league game on Sunday. Jones only had singles as hits.
He had a.250 average (2-for-8) in his first two games at the Double-A level.
Jones’s impressive season in Hudson Valley, where he Һit.268/.337/.450/.787 in 100 games, earned him a promotion. He drove in 56 runs and Һit 13 home runs, with 28 doubles and 4 triples. He had a 133 K%, a 42% BB%, and a 35% SB% while also steаling 35 bases.
Twenty-five games total in 2022, three with the Yankees’ rookie squad in the Florida Complex League and twenty-two with the Class-A Tampa Yankees. He excelled, with a.344/.425/.538/.963 slash line with six doubles, four home runs, and 12 RBI. He had 20 strikeouts, 11 walks, and 12 stolen bases.
At pick number 25 in the first round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft, Jones of Vanderbilt was selected by the Yankees. Jones was picked by the Los Angeles Angels in the 31st round of the 2019 MLB Draft, but he decided against signing with the team. Jones had recently recovered from surgery to fix a fracture in his pitching elbow. In 2020, it prompted the Tommy John operation.
Jones got a $2.880 million bonus with the Yankees after slashing.370/.460/.644 in his senior year at Vanderbilt.
His promotion follows two others in the Yankees’ organization. Last week, the Yankees promoted Everson Pereira from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to the major leagues. The outfielder was ranked as the team’s third-best future star. The Yankees wasted no time getting their second-best prоspect, outfielder Jasson Dominguez, to Triple-A.
