Reds place rookie infielder McLain on injured list due to oblique strain

McLain has been among the Reds’ best hitters since his callup to the Major Leagues in May, hitting .290/.357/.507 with 16 home runs, 50 runs batted in and 14 stolen bases.
McLain’s .864 OPS is second among National League rookies, trailing only Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Corbin Carroll.
The 24-year-old out of UCLA began his time in the Major Leagues playing primarily shortstop, but after an injury to second baseman Jonathan India, McLain has shifted to second base, with fellow rookie Elly De La Cruz manning shortstop.
McLain now becomes one of several Reds position players currently on the injured list, joining India, outfielder Jake Fraley and first baseman Joey Votto.

To fill McLain’s roster spot, the Reds are calling upon outfielder Stuart Fairchild, who was activated Monday from the 7-day concussion list.
Fairchild is hitting .229/.323/.388 with five home runs and nine stolen bases in 201 at-bats this season.
The Reds, who currently sit at 68-64 and 1.5 games out of the final National League Wild Card spot, will begin a three-game series against the Giants in San Francisco on Monday night.
