On Friday, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin will become the next victim of the team’s ιnjury wоes by having Tommy John surgery on his right arm.
The Dodgers announced before Monday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks that Gonsolin will have head club physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache repair his ruptured right ulnar collateral ligament on Friday in Los Angeles.
Right-handed pitcher, age 29; 8-5 record; 4.98 ERA in 20 starts. On August 19 he allowed a career-high 10 earned runs and five home runs in 3 1/3 innings against Miami, leading to his placement on the disabled list.
Manager Dave Roberts claimed that Gonsolin has been suffering from an elbow ιnjury all year.
When asked about the issue, Roberts remarked, “It is something he was dealing with, but there was a point where he felt he could get hitters out until he couldn’t.” He had no symptoms. He could throw a pitch right now, but it wouldn’t accomplish anything.
The escalators Gonsolin triggered increased his compensation from $3.25 million this year to $5.4 million in 2024. After 14 starts, he made $500,000, and for each subsequent start, he made an additional $500,000.
I can empathize and see things from a player’s point of view, and I believe that was inspiration to throw. Roberts said that regardless of when we intervened, he would have ended up in the same place a month later. It was because “we were running through some guys” and “he felt he wаnted to keep pitching and help his team.”
Despite starting the season with their entire rotation on the injured list, Los Angeles nevertheless managed to build a 12-game lead in the NL West and is on course to avoid the wild card stage.
Dodgers starters had thrown the third-fewest innings in the National League heading into Monday’s game. Their starters have a 4.48 ERA, good for ninth-worst in the National League.
Gonsolin will be sitting out the playoffs for a second year in a row. Last year’s final five weeks were wasted because of a right forearm discomfort.
Since the beginning of last season, three Dodgers starters—including Gonsolin—have need Tommy John surgery. Dustin May, a right-handed pitcher, underwent surgery on his right flexor tendon on July 18.
After having elbow reconstruction surgery in August of last year, Walker Buehler did not throw a pitch in 2019. The right-hander threw only one inning in the Arizona Complex League this season, despite hopes that he would return later.
