Following his league debut for Inter Miami, Lionel Messi appears to have broken Major League Soccer rules.
Messi played his first MLS match on Saturday night for Miami against the New York Red Bulls. The team led by Gerardo Martino won 2-0 in the club’s first league match since July 16.
After the win, Messi seems to have breached several MLS rules, though. This is due to Messi’s silence when contacted by reporters following the victory at Red Bull Arena.
Before Miami’s victory, MLS Executive Vice President of Communications Dan Courtemanche reportedly stated that Messi and all other players must be accessible for post-match media duties. Messi, who does not speak English well, chose not to interact with any reporters after the game.
After the game, Messi would not be available for any post-game media duties, according to Inter Miami spokeswoman Molly Dreska. That would seem to be against the league’s media guidelines.
Miami has won all eight of its games, including seven of them on its route to the League Cup. The most recent triumph was a U.S. Open Cup penalty shootout victory over FC Cincinnati.
Prior to the match against the Red Bulls on Saturday night, Messi had yet to play in an MLS match. The Argentine icon increased his goal total in Harrison, New Jersey, to 11, which he had already reached in his previous eight games.
Messi was placed on the substitutes’ bench by Martino, who cited the forward’s need for recovery following a hectic month of play for his new team. After Messi’s introduction at the hour mark, Diego Gomez scored the game’s first goal.
In the 89th minute, with stoppage time approaching, Messi was able to score. In just his ninth game for the Florida club after joining as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, the World Cup winner scored his 11th goal.
With Nashville SC as their next opponent on Wednesday night at the DRV PNK Stadium, Miami has a hectic MLS schedule coming up. Then, on Sunday, September 3, there will be an away trip to Los Angeles FC.
Miami was lifted out of last place in the MLS Eastern Conference thanks to the victory over the Red Bulls. With 10 league games remaining, Messi and company currently occupy the 14th spot with 21 points from 23 games, 11 points below the play-off spots.
