The damage from the 13-round loss of the Texas Rangers

The Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Sunday to retake sole ownership of the lead in the American League West. Luis Castillo pitched seven innings without allowing a run while allowing just one hit.

The resurgent Mariners are now one game ahead of slumping Texas and the Houston Astros at the top of the division after Sunday’s triumph and the Texas Rangers’ 13-inning defeat to the Minnesota Twins.

On August 15, Seattle was 7 1/2 games behind the Rangers in the standings, but it has since won 11 of its last 12 games while Texas has dropped nine of its past 10. Since July 25, the Mariners have an MLB-best 24-6 record.

Castillo won his fourth straight start with just two baserunners allowed, and he received support from two home runs: Teoscar Hernandez’s single shot in the second inning and Julio Rodriguez’s two-run bomb in the fifth.

Kansas City was within 3-2 after Nelson Velazquez’s two-run home run off reliever Gabe Speier in the eighth, but Andres Munoz’s strikeout of the side in order to end the three-game series for the Mariners.

Alec Marsh, the starting pitcher for the Royals, had nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings but allowed both home runs against Seattle, dropping to 0-7 in 11 appearances (seven starts) this season.

Five runs behind, the Twins come back to defeat the floundering Rangers in 13 innings.

After blowing a five-run lead in a wild, 7-6 defeat to the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins in 13 innings, the Texas Rangers lost their share of the AL West lead.

After falling behind 5-0 after five innings, Minnesota came back to tie the game in the ninth, then scored the game’s winning run in the 13th by taking advantage of three walks issued by Rangers reliever Jonathan Hernandez.

After falling behind 5-0 after five innings, Minnesota came back to tie the game in the ninth, then scored the game’s winning run in the 13th by taking advantage of three walks issued by Rangers reliever Jonathan Hernandez.

To give Minnesota its third victory of the four-game series, Hernandez walked Joey Gallo, Matt Wallner, and Michael A. Taylor in succession after striking out the first two hitters he faced in the bottom of the 13th.

A season-high 10 walks were given by Texas pitchers this afternoon, including one to Taylor by closer Aroldis Chapman with one out in the bottom of the ninth and the Rangers clinging to a 5-4 lead. After being penalized for a balk, Chapman allowed Taylor to advance to second before giving up a single to Donovan Solano that tied the score.

With a grand slam off reliever Chris Stratton in the sixth, Royce Lewis launched Minnesota’s rally and brought the Twins within one run.

Texas led 5-0 after Jonah Heim hit a grand slam against Twins starter Bailey Ober in the fourth inning. J.P. Martinez’s lone home run in the second inning gave the Rangers the lead.

Dallas Keuchel pitched five shutout innings after taking over for Ober to begin the fifth, and Dylan Floro earned the victory by stranding two Texas runners after entering in the top of the 13th.

To make their winning streak eight games long, the Brewers thrash the Padres.

The Brewers, who are now playing on an eight-game winning streak, are the hottest club in the National League. They beat the San Diego Padres 10-6 thanks to a seven-run sixth inning.

Sal Frelick scored three runs, and William Contreras went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs as the NL Central-leading Brewers completed a three-game sweep ahead of a crucial three-game road series against the division rival Chicago Cubs.

Second-place Chicago, which kept pace with Sunday’s 10-1 thrashing of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is four games behind Milwaukee in the standings.

Before Rowdy Tellez’s pinch-hit, two-run double off Steven Wilson in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out, the Brewers were behind 4-2. Wilson then walked Carlos Santana with the bases loaded to bring in the winning run.

Before Mark Canha finished the big inning with a two-run single, Frelick extended the advantage to 7-4 with a two-run double off Nick Martinez.

With four scoreless innings in relief of Brewers starter Adrian Houser, who only lasted two innings and gave up four runs, Bryse Wilson earned the victory.

Gary Sanchez led San Diego, which fell to a season-high nine games under.500 at 61-70, going 2 for 4 with a two-run home run.
