Lionel Messi’s wife Antonela goes to hug husband after Inter Miami game, realises it isn’t him and awkward reaction follows
Given his success in Major League Soccer (MLS), Lionel Messi has brought his family to the United States to join him at Inter Miami.
The 36-year-old, who rose through the ranks of Barcelona’s youth team and enjoyed a trophy-laden tenure at the Camp Nou, retired from European football during the summer after becoming a legend there.
Messi has been playing for Paris Saint-Germain in France for the past two years. While there, he has won two Ligue 1 championships, he hasn’t been able to match his Barcelona team’s Champions League triumph at Parc des Princes.
The now-seasoned player joined David Beckham’s Inter Miami in the MLS, which is a usual transfer for players in their final years of competition.
Despite only being in Miami for a few months, Messi has already had a fruitful stay.
His new team recently defeated Nashville on penalties to win the Leagues Cup, and after defeating FC Cincinnati in the US Open Cup, they advanced to another final in short succession.
It was anything from simple, though, as Inter Miami had to rally from a two-goal deficit to force a 3-3 tie and force the game into overtime.
Messi contributed two assists to the game and made his penalty as Inter Miami prevailed 5-4 in a shootout to go to the championship game against Houston Dynamo.
Messi’s wife Antonela Roccuzzo joined the festivities after the win and went looking for her husband to offer him her congratulations.
She ran in to hug him, believing she had seen Messi, according to video, only to realize at the last second that it was Jordi Alba, a colleague of Messi’s who currently plays for Inter Miami after leaving Barcelona.
The defender’s Barca contract was terminated a year early, prompting him to join the MLS team during the summer.
Once she realized it wasn’t her husband, Roccuzzo walked up to Alba with his arms outstretched, ready to embrace him. Instead, the two exchanged half-hearted hugs, with Roccuzzo appearing to realize his error and laugh it off in good humor.
