Giannis Antetokounmpo has stated that he will wait to sign a contract extension until he knows the Milwaukee Bucks’ level of dedication to winning another title.
The two-time MVP may exercise his player option for the 2025-26 season next month, extending his current contract through the 2024-25 season. Antetokounmpo said he wouldn’t sign an extension this year to The New York Times. He speculated that it will become clearer the next summer, adding, “but even then, I don’t know.”
To paraphrase Antetokounmpo: “I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody is on the same page, everybody is going for a championship, everybody is going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do.” To paraphrase: “And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”
Seven months after signing a supermax extension, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to their first championship in half a century in 2021. However, in the last two years, the Bucks have been eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.
In 2022-23, the Bucks had the best regular-season record in the NBA, but they were eliminated by the Miami Heat in five games. After that, they brought in former Toronto Raptors assistant coach Adrian Griffin to replace fired head coach Mike Budenholzer.
With a new coaching staff in place, Antetokounmpo said he wants to “see the dynamics” before deciding whether to remain with the Bucks. Antetokounmpo also expressed a desire to spend his entire professional career with the same team.
“But ultimately, winning is all about that,” Antetokounmpo said. To claim a title is priority number one. If I’m on the same team for the next 20 years and we don’t keep winning, I’m going to go crаzy.
