Football legend Alan Shearer has expressed his concerns about Manchester United’s midfield issues following an unconvincing start to the season under coach Erik Ten Hag. Man Utd narrowly secured a 1-0 victory over Wolves in their Premier League opener but suffered a 0-2 defeat to Tottenham in their second match last weekend.
It was judged that Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, and Casemiro played poorly in midfield
Speaking on The Rest is Football program, Shearer stated, “Man Utd’s performance over the weekend was poor. Coach Ten Hag needs to address the midfield puzzle, as it’s evident that the trio of Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes hasn’t been effective in both matches. They’ve faced defeats in both games, struggling with ball control, and lacking creative passes. There are numerous issues they need to work on.”

Echoing Shearer’s sentiments, former Man Utd player Roy Keane also highlighted midfield concerns, particularly focusing on the attacking contributions of Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes. Keane remarked, “Mount and Fernandes didn’t perform well against Wolves, yet the team still won. I anticipated a better showing against Tottenham, but that wasn’t the case. While they looked decent in the first half-hour, football is a 90-minute game and they couldn’t maintain dominance throughout. Nevertheless, they need to exhibit their determination and fighting spirit in any circumstance.”

According to the Dailymail, midfielder Mason Mount is set to miss the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League’s third round due to injury. His absence is expected to extend to the subsequent match against Arsenal as well. Currently, Manchester United holds the 12th position in the league standings, having secured only 3 points from two matches, marking a less-than-ideal start among the “Big Six” teams.
