JAMES HARDEN FINED $100K FOR CALLING THE SIXERS OWNER ‘A LIAR’

Throughout the summer, James Harden and Daryl Morey, owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, engaged in a very public feud. Now, the NBA has fined Harden $100,000 for his controversial comments.

In a news conference held in China on August 14, the 10-time All-Star guard made it clear that he will not play for the Sixers if he is not traded. Harden has stated, “Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he is a part of.” Let me be clear: Daryl Morey is a liar, and I have no intention of ever joining any group that includes him. Morey and Harden reportedly had a conversation in which Harden exercised his player option for $35.6 million and Morey committed to try to trade him to another team, which led to the 33-year-old’s statements, per Yahoo Sports. It appears that Morey has not kept his half of the bargain, though.

Harden’s commitment not to participate puts him in viоlatiоn of his player contract, the NBA says, not his criticism of the Sixers’ owner. The 2017–18 NBA Most Valuable Player was interviewed by the league and found “he would not perform the services called for under his player contract unless traded to another team.” The Washingtоn Post reports that Harden would be most satisfied with a trade to the Los Angeles Clippers, but as negotiations broke down and no reasonable offer was made, Morey stopped trying to trade him. The team owner was determined to locate “a very good player or something that we can turn into a very good player” to take the position of their starting point guard. Morey and Harden had previously worked together amicably, first when Morey was general manager of the Houston Rockets and then when Harden agreed to leave the Brooklyn Nets to join the Sixers.
