A “serious injury” to Kevin De Bruyne may prevent him from playing for “a few months.”
To ascertain the severity of a hamstring injury sustained in the Premier League victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Friday night, the 32-year-old Manchester City midfielder underwent a scan on Monday.
Just 23 minutes into the match, De Bruyne was taken off the field due to the identical problem that forced him to leave early in the Champions League final against Inter Milan in June.
The Belgian international may now need surgery, according to manager Pep Guardiola, who made the announcement ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup match with Sevilla in Athens.
Guardiola affirmed, “It’s a major injury. He will be sidelined for a few months while we determine whether to operate.
However, the Spaniard worries that “three or four months” without one of his great players will pass before a decision is made.
In the second half of last Sunday’s loss to Arsenal in the penalty shootout, De Bruyne made his first appearance since the Community Shield match against Inter. He went to Asia with City on their preseason trip but was not involved.
De Bruyne made 49 appearances across all competitions for City’s treble-winning club last season, with 10 goals and 31 assists.
Prior to facing Newcastle United on Saturday in the Premier League, City plays Sevilla on Wednesday.
