UEFA Super Cup: Man City vs Sevilla

Sevilla suffered a lot during the past year and ended 12th in La Liga last season. Mendilibar’s squad likewise had a dismal opening game of the La Liga 2023–24 season, losing 1-2 at home to Valencia.

Man City, now regarded as the best team in Europe, finished last season with a treble. The Premier League campaign for coach Pep Guardiola’s team recently got underway with a triumphant 3-0 win at Burnley, and striker Erling Haaland is continuing to display his terrifying goal-scoring prowess.

At first glance, Sevilla’s issues from the previous season appear to still exist. Man City continues to be harmful in the meanwhile. That outcome gives Pep Guardiola’s kids a great attitude going into the European Super Cup encounter.

Man City naturally beats Sevilla in terms of the current force.

Due to budgetary issues, Sevilla did not have many significant reinforcements. The only new players they have signed so far are Djibril Sow (Frankfurt), Bade Loic (Rennes), and Karim Rekik (Al Jazira), while the other young players are in form. Several players arrived on free transfers and on loans.

Older players like Rakitic, Jesus Navas, Bounou, etc., or well-known players like Ocampos, Lamela, or striker En-Nesyri continue to be Sevilla’s pillars of strength.

Man City is unique in that their enormous wealth from Arab owners allows them to sign more costly players like Matteo Kovacic and Josko Gvadiol from RB Leipzig, and they are now in negotiations with Lucas Paqueta from West Ham and Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

British teams have claimed 11 championships in the event’s 40-year existence, while Spanish teams have done so 19 times.

Man City is participating in its first European Super Cup match, while Sevilla has only ever won once, in 2006, after defeating Barcelona 3-0 despite having played in six Super Cup matches and won a record seven Europa League crowns.

Coach Mendilibar is also coaching in his debut European Super Cup game, unlike Pep Guardiola of Man City has won the trophy three times, twice with Barcelona (2009, 2011) and once with Bayern Munich (20013). Not to mention that he also won the trophy in 1992 while wearing a Barcelona jersey.

In their four meetings, Manchester City has a perfect record against Sevilla and has won all four games. Haaland scored twice to assist Green Man in a 4-0 victory during the Champions League group stage 2022–2023 at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Man City sustained significant loses in this game as a result of the injury to midfielder Kevin de Bruyne. Ruben Dias at center defense and John Stones at midfield are unlikely to make a full recovery in time to play Sevilla. Josko Gvardiol, a £90 million rookie, will probably replace Dias and start from the beginning.

Tanguy Nianzou, a center back for Sevilla, is anticipated to miss the match after suffering a hamstring injury earlier this month, while Marcao has yet to resume full training.

Man City is superior to Sevilla in every way, and despite the odds being close, the English team has a better chance of winning.
