Kyrie Irving, currently of the Dallas Mavericks but formerly of the Brooklyn Nets, has spoken out in support of his former teammate James Harden.
Harden recently attended a press event in China with Adidas basketball, and a video showing him calling Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the 76ers, a “liar” went viral on X (previously known as Twitter) on Monday.
This followed a report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Saturday that the Sixers had terminated trade talks involving Harden, and a subsequent characterization of Harden as a “disgruntled star” on X.
On Monday, Irving appeared to respond to Wojnarowski’s tweet in which he described the former NBA MVP as “disgruntled” about the situation by calling out Wojnarowski directly.
“Is he Adrian the Disgruntled?” Writing by Irving. Or, as the question suggests, is he holding Daryl Morey to account for his dishonesty and lack of transparency during the summer’s contract negotiations?
As of Monday, Wojnarowski had not responded to Irving’s remarks.
Irving has had his share of public troubles and was given the “disgruntled” treatment when he tried to leave Brooklyn a few years ago.
Irving felt “very disrespected” at times during his four years with the Nets, but after being moved to the Mavericks in February, he felt “really wаnted” by his new team.
The circumstances surrounding Harden may have served as a sobering reminder of that time for Irving.
When questioned at the press conference, “What do you think about the current team claiming to end trade talks and trying to bring you back to the team?” Harden reportedly took aim at Morey.
In a video released by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Harden, who asked to be traded from the 76ers in June, can be heard calling Morey a “liar” twice while the audience cheers.
Harden has stated, “Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of any organization that he is a part of.”
To restate, “Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never join an organization that includes him.”
Wojnarowski stated that the Sixers intend to bring the 10-time All-Star back to training camp for the start of the season, despite Harden’s displeasure with Morey over the lack of a long-term max contract offer.
In July of 2022, Harden turned down the 76ers’ $47.4 million player option in favor of a $33 million agreement for the upcoming 2022-23 season, a $15 million salary drop.
Harden picked up the player option on the last year of his contract for $35.6 million in June, sparking rumors of a breach between the point guard and Morey that ultimately led to Harden’s trade request.
Sources tell ESPN that the Philadelphia 76ers conducted talks with Harden’s preferred team, the Los Angeles Clippers, but no deal was reached because Philadelphia’s asking price was too high.
Wojnarowski stated on Monday’s episode of “NBA Today” that the 76ers “really have not had any interest in trading James Harden.” They won’t get anything in return for him that would help them remain a title contender. They effectively removed him from sale.
According to Wojnarowski’s report from Monday, Harden’s plan is to make the Sixers so uneasy that they conclude they can’t bring him back and trade him in a deal they won’t want.
According to Wojnarowski, “this has been escalating behind the scenes all year.” “At this point, it’s in the open.”
By the time training camp begins in September, the Sixers reportedly intend to learn to live with Harden.
Harden has now tried to be traded away from his third franchise in as many seasons.
After a tense summer of 2021 between the Sixers and point guard Ben Simmons, the two teams made a blockbuster trade that sent Simmons to the Nets in February 2022.
During Harden’s eight years with the Houston Rockets, Morey helped him develop into a superstar.
