For what they call “precautionary reasons,” the Dallas Mavericks’ All-NBA guard Luka Doncic will not be playing in Slovenia’s exhibition game against the United States on Saturday.
Slovenia was playing the second of back-to-back games following Friday’s preseason loss to Spain, 99-79. In preparation for the World Cup, which starts later this month, Doncic scored 17 points in that game and has already had two triple-doubles in his first three summer games with the national team.
Ԁоncic left FriԀаy’s gаme eаrly with аn injury, but he cаme bаck fоr the secоnԀ hаlf. Slоveniа hаs stаteԀ thаt it will “nоt wаnt tо leаve аnything tо chаnce” when it trаvels tо Jаpаn tо cоmplete its WоrlԀ Cup prepаrаtiоns there.
Slovenia, rated seventh in the world by FIBA (the international basketball federation), is competing in its first ever World Cup and hopes to bring home a medal. Two years ago, Doncic led Slovenia to a fourth-place finish at the Olympics in Tokyo. He was the tournament’s leader in scoring (23.8 points per game), rebounding (9.7 boards per game), and assists (9.5 dimes per game).
On August 19, Slovenia will face Japan in a final exhibition match. World Cup play for Doncic and company begins on August 26 against Venezuela in Okinawa, Japan, following by contests against Georgia on August 28 and Cape Verde on August 30.
Last year with the Mavericks, Doncic posted averages of 32.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, and 8 apg. In addition to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City for Canada, he is one of two All-NBA players from last season who will be participating in the World Cup.
