The Texas Rangers have made several roster changes in preparation for the series opener against the San Francisco Giants. These moves reflect the team’s dynamic approach to player management and readiness.
Outfielder Travis Jankowski has been placed on the MLB Paternity Leave List, allowing him up to 72 hours of absence. Jankowski’s contributions this season have been noteworthy, with a batting average of .292, one home run, and 25 RBI in 75 games. He has also showcased his speed with 16 stolen bases, leading the team in this category.
Stepping into the mix is outfielder J.P. Martínez (#50), whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Round Rock. Martínez is primed for his Major League debut, having delivered an impressive performance across different levels of play this season. His combined stats of .311/.435/.558/.993 (83-267) include 12 home runs, 56 RBI, and an impressive 36 stolen bases.
Martínez’s versatility is evident as he has made starts in various positions – center field (35), left field (16), right field (13), and designated hitter (6). The 27-year-old from Cuba, signed as a non-drafted free agent by Texas on March 6, 2018, has consistently demonstrated his skills during his time in the Rangers system.
Meanwhile, outfielder Bubba Thompson, currently on option at Triple-A Round Rock, has been designated for assignment. Thompson’s season with the team has seen a batting average of .170 (9-53) with 4 RBI over 37 games and 14 starts in two stints.
His contributions have spanned from Opening Day to June 2, and then from July 28 to August 1. The Rangers have a seven-day window to decide whether to release or outright Thompson to the minor leagues.
With these adjustments, the Texas Rangers maintain their 40-man limit on the Major League roster, while also having three players – Jacob deGrom, Brett Martin, and Jake Odorizzi – on the 60-day Injured List.
The team’s strategic moves showcase their commitment to adaptability and maximizing player potential as they gear up for the series against the Giants.
