Just one day before Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup quarterfinal matchup against MLS opponent Charlotte FC, Lionel Messi was photographed appearing calm and collected in practice while club co-owner David Beckham looked on.

At the Florida Blue Training Center on Thursday, the 36-year-old was put through his paces once more with his teammates. At times, he even smiled while talking with the team’s relatively new left-back Jordi Alba, and striker Josef Martinez.

Messi has been spectacular since arriving in America last month. In three starts for the Herons, he has scored seven goals and provided one assist, but all of those goals and assists have come in the League Cup.

And now, as a result of Miami’s surprisingly deep run in the US domestic cup that only comprises Liga MX and MLS teams, the 2022 World Cup champion will have to wait a bit longer before making his MLS debut.

At DRV PNK Stadium on August 20, Messi was scheduled to make his league debut—ironically against Charlotte—but the game has now been postponed. The match has not yet been given a new date.

The New York Red Bulls will visit Harrison, New Jersey on August 26 for Messi’s debut in an MLS game.

Messi caused controversy earlier this week when a video emerged of the Argentine changing the angle of the ball while the referee was not looking. Messi later scored a free kick against FC Dallas to tie Inter Miami in a penalty shootout victory in the Leagues Cup’s round of 16 after both teams had finished the game tied 4-4.

Additionally, on August 6, two days after his team’s most recent victory, the Argentine was seen traveling to Fort Lauderdale with his wife Antonela, who was also his childhood sweetheart, as they took a vacation from house-hunting in Magic City.

The Argentine FA also praised Messi for his impressive start to the American season this week, praising the 103-goal all-time leading scorer with an emotive video that read: “They say you can see aliens in the United States.”

Messi joined Inter Miami last month, and the team has gone undefeated (4-0) since then. Prior to Messi’s announcement that he would be departing Europe this summer, Inter Miami had not won in nine straight MLS games.

After spending two years at Paris Saint-Germain, Messi signed with Miami in July.

Messi has scored more than 700 goals in his more than 17-year career with FC Barcelona.

With Inter Miami, he signed a two-and-a-half-year deal valued between $50 million and $60 million annually.

The anticipated value of the transaction in cash alone ranges from $125M to $150M.
