Shohei Ohtani, a two-way standout with the Angels, has had a historic 2023 season so far, and he never ceases to impress.
Simply put, Shohei Ohtani’s 2023 season is legendary. Being this excellent both at the plate and on the mound is still one of the pinnacles of brilliance, and what the Los Angeles Angels player is doing is just unique. The Angels are persistent in their pursuit of the playoffs for a reason, and on Monday night, Ohtani demonstrated that they may actually have a chance because of him.
Ohtani contributed to his club’s 2-1 advantage as of the time of this writing on Monday night, while the Angels and San Francisco Giants, the team they defeated in the 2002 World Series, were locked in a close game. Ohtani singled off Logan Webb in the bottom of the first inning, then stole second base to record his 15th season-high heist.
Shohei Ohtani made history by becoming just the second player in MLB history to have at least 40 home runs and 15 steals in the team’s first 120 games. Ken Griffey Jr., a member of the Hall of Fame, is the only other player to have completed the aforementioned accomplishment. Griffey accomplished this feat 25 years ago, in a season in which he finished with a total of 56 home runs, tying his career high for a single season.
The Angels actor continues to distinguish himself from his contemporaries. Ohtani’s anticipated elite pitching, which put him on par with baseball’s top strikeout artists, was his biggest selling point when he first entered the league.
He’s always been a good hitter as well, but this year, he produced the third-most batting WAR in the league, according to Fangraphs. That accomplishment alone is amazing. And today, as demonstrated by the accomplishment he just tallied, Ohtani is still a solid asset on the basepaths.
Sadly, the past few weeks have not been kind to the Angels. They decided to go for it because of a great run-up to the trade deadline, but now that the Angels have been swept in a four-game series by the Seattle Mariners, Ohtani will have his job cut out for him in trying to save them.
