Anthony Davis, now 30, receives the largest average yearly salary increase in NBA history after agreeing to a three-year, $186 million max deal extension with the Los Angeles Lakers that will keep him there until 2028.
NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweeted on Friday that the deal, which is worth more than $270 million, has been finalized.
Davis, who has the versatility to play either power forward or center, will now earn $62M annually.
After becoming eligible to sign the three-year extension on Friday, Lakers general manager Rоb Pelinka and NBA suрer agent Rich Paul moved quickly to finalize the deal, as he was owed $84M over the following two years.
Along with LeBron James, Davis is one of the Lakers’ two marquee players who helped the team reach the Western Conference Finals last year.
He was traded to the West Coast from New Orleans in a huge deal in 2019, and he was a key member of the Purple and Gold’s championship team in 2020, when the playoffs were held in Orlando, Florida, near Disney World.
Davis shot a career-high 56 percent from the field for the Lakers last season, while also averaging 26 points, 12.5 points, and two blocks a game.
The No. 3 pick for the Lakers is an eight-time All-Star and four-time first-team All-NBA selection.
Since entering the NBA as the first overall choice in 2012, he has amassed a five-season average of 25 points and two blocks. According to ESPN Stats & Information, that is the third-highest total of all time, trailing only Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Davis, along with Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, became the third player in NBA playoff history to record 50 blocks, accomplishing this feat in 2022–23.
Given the likelihood that 38-year-old LeBron James doesn’t have a long future with the Lakers, the team’s signing of Chicago native Davis to a contract provides them one star to build around.
However, due to a plethora of ailments, the athlete has yet to complete a season with the Lakers. His best season in Los Angeles was 2019-20, when he appeared in 62 games.
Davis has averaged 24.0 points and 10.4 rebounds in 660 career games (653 starts) for New Orleans (2012-19) and the Lakers.
On July 15, he was photographed in Las Vegas at the WNBA All-Star Game, sitting courtside.
